One Story Of An Inspiring Labrador

The extraordinary rescue and recovery tale of a sweet Labrador Retriever name Pepper recently won the 1st prize in a challenge conducted by Purina Pro Plan and Rally to Rescue. Based on a MarketWatch.com report, Sheryl Hogan rescued the homeless dog and her Den Animal Rescue team was presented the grand prize in recognition of the efforts they put in to get Pepper back on her feet. When Sheryl found Pepper deserted on the highway in February last year, she refused to leave the traumatized dog alone and ensured that Pepper got all of the professional medical as well as emotional attention she deserved to bring her back to normal.

How Sheryl Hogan found Pepper

Pepper was thrown from a vehicle and left behind on the road. Sheryl happened to observe this outrageous incident on a wintry February day as she was driving back after saving animals scheduled to be put down. If not for Sheryl, Pepper would not have managed to make it through the icy wintry day on her own. Sheryl rescued Pepper and traveled to the veterinarian only to discover that Pepper had sustained quite a few fractures and hip dysphasia. Pepper also showed symptoms of severe hair loss from malnutrition and parasites. She had suffered a lot of emotional trauma, and was quite untrusting and frightened.

Pepper's winning battle against all odds

Sheryl was aware that Pepper necessary physical and emotional care for a long amount of time. Sheryl decided to attend to Pepper herself rather than giving her over to foster homes. Sheryl sat by Pepper for months and talked to her all the time before she slowly but surely began accepting affection through labrador retriever gifts and gained trust. Initially terrified of the smallest disturbances, Pepper soon found her stride and became a very happy pooch. Pepper is currently a permanent member of the Hogan family. Pepper is also an integral part of Hogan's animal rescue shelter. This inspiring account of inner strength and resolve to survive is a ray of hope for many other pet lovers.

How Rally to Rescue and Purina Pro Plan help

More than 60 stories were sent in to the judging panel that narrowed it down to ten final contestants. More than twelve thousand votes were taken from June through October who agreed that Pepper's story of survival was a source of inspiration. Pepper and Sheryl will be honored on Thanksgiving Day before the National Dog Show. The winning pair will also be given exclusive backstage tours and tickets. In addition to a personal interaction with legendary dog expert David Frei, Sheryl's Den Animal Rescue also will receive $5,000 worth of pet food coupons from Purina Pro Plan to help in providing a healthy eating plan to the rescued animals.

Purina Pro Plan expressed their appreciation in rewarding such acts of valor and also perseverance. Calling this story a great example of pet rescue, the contest is an effort to honor groups that work towards a better life for deserted pets through adoptions and also volunteering. The Rally to Rescue is an element of a pet rescue program organized by Purina Pro Plan and has helped over 400,000 pets locate a loving home. The group has additionally donated more than $1 million to the program over the past 2 years.
