Getting To Know Kathy Durst Artist

By Marcia Marks

Kathy Durst artist is an American art teacher from Redwing, Minnesota. Growing up in Rockford, Illinois, she earned a teaching certificate in Visual Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Austin campus of the University of Texas. Retired from teaching, it was not long before she was invited to participate in her first solo showing of her ark-full of paper painted collage animals in 2014 at the Ross Gallery.

With 25 years of experience adding beauty to the world, the artist has used almost every medium and technique imaginable. The work that is available online is mostly produced using paper painting collage. "Roseate Spoonbill" is an example of the level of detail and range of colors and textures that can be achieved using this technique.

"Lammie" and "Yulka" illustrate what can be achieved by creatively employing paint and carefully selected scraps of paper. In "Yulka, " we see an empty soft drink bottle showing through a floral patterned swimsuit for flotation. This is a very deft application of the collage painting technique.

The materials are readily available and inexpensive and the techniques can be taught to preschoolers. With her 25 years' experience and maturity, Ms Durst produces some complex and ingeniously patterned results. It is easy to find tutorials of collage methods on the Internet. If you really want to understand the artist, it is worth spending some time getting to know the medium.

Most of the subjects of Durst's work that you will find involve animals; this is the theme of her Ross Gallery exposition. In the whimsical, "Take Me Along, " you see two scuba divers working their way through a sea of atlas cuttings and musical notes. They look really happy. Try THAT with a set of watercolors and paper.

View this artist's work at your own peril and be prepared to spend time and money experimenting with your own painted paper collage artistry. It is positively inspiring. Seriously, just watching someone do it on YouTube is entrancing.

Her "Rose, " is a different kettle of fish. Apart from being a departure from animals, it may or may not be another example of the painted paper collage technique. It could be. She is that good. The blossom is in shades of flamingo and coral, with little splashes of the main hues dotted around in the surrounding foliage.

Kathy Durst artist uses textured papers and stencils in her work to give it character and depth. As beginners, the best we can hope for is a lovingly-produced Sunday School project. Find the date of her next showing and track down her work. You will be hooked.

Introductory Details About Ancient North African Clay Jars

By Gamal Rasheed

Canopic jar chests were one of the most important ritualistic items utilized in the elaborate burial customs that the Egyptians practiced. Prior to the mummification process many organs were removed from the dead body and placed inside Canopic jars which would consequently be placed inside a Canopic chest. The chest containing the organs would be placed next to the tomb in a dedicated space called the Canopic shrine.

In ancient days, the Egyptians thought that it was practical for the dead if they were willing, to return to the body. Therefore, preserving the different organs was supposed to be essential. Mummification involved a detailed procedure, where in the organs needed to be removed and kept in the Canopic jars and then in the Canopic chest. It took many days for completion.

Canopic chests were first used during the second Dynasty period. As years passed by, these Canopic jar chests were altered several times to portray different designs. They were used in ritualism till the arrival of the Ptolemaic age.

The earliest proven evidence of Canopic burials goes back to the fourth Dynasty and was discovered at Giza in the tomb of Queen Meresankh III. This was during the time period of the reign of Menkaure. Examples of Canopic burials have also been found from the tombs that were made during the reign of Sneferu.

Among the oldest Canopic jars, boxes made from wood were used to put the internal organs, and were fastened securely. Jars made from stone or potteries were also used in some burials. They were covered either with flattened or dome-like lids. The chests were made out of soft stone. However, in some instances, they were made by shaping out the floor of the tomb or perhaps the wall of the tomb by cutting through them.

Throughout the sixth Dynasty, granite was utilized to make the Canopic jar chests. Around the eighteenth century, cartonnage, wood, limestone, calcite and numerous other materials were used to make these Canopic jar chests.

Over the years, the Canopic jars wherein the organs of the corpse were kept were also modified. At first these jars were made of stone and covered with flat lids. They were then modified to have dome-shaped lids.

Following this the Egyptians experimented with a number of different materials which they utilized to create the jars. These jars contained four organs which were the liver, the stomach, the lungs and the intestines. Each of these organs was associated with specific deities.

Through the centuries, alterations in making the Canopic jars were visualized in numerous ways. A number of the ideas were practically put to work, to make a variety of Canopic jars. In several jars, the lids were made out of a sculpture of jackal heads. These jackal heads were symbolic of the four sons of Horus. Each one of the organs was ascribed to one of the sons of Hours. These were further guarded by some other stronger Egyptian deity.

How To Ensure Success With An Art Gallery West Chester PA

By Vicki Diaz

There is no question as to the financial viability of establishing an art gallery West Chester PA. The large numbers of individuals who ply this trade and earn great amounts from it are prim, face evidence that it can be a profitable venture. The only thing is that one needs to learn the tricks of this trade. There a few tips which if implemented can go a long way in ensuring success for the individual.

The first thing an entrepreneur should do is to make people aware that he or she has opened an art gallery. It would be a great idea to host an event at the store where everyone is invited to have a look at what is on offer from the new establishment. If possible, prominent artists should be invited to such an event.

It goes without saying that clients should have the opportunity to view what the store has to offer. The clients should also be given the opportunity to make the maiden purchases from the store at a discounted rate. The entrepreneur should also take advantage of such an event to build a rapport with his or her target clientele.

The above mentioned event should not be the only one of its kind for the store. Holding such an event on a regular basis is a good idea. During the subsequent events, the entrepreneur can choose to invite artists to present their works of art and make some sales. The entrepreneur would then charge a pre- set amount for every piece of art sold by any of the guest artists.

One thing that all entrepreneurs need to avoid is buying counterfeit pieces of art. It is better for an art gallery to have a few pieces of original paintings for example instead of having tones of imitated works. Having counterfeit pieces of art can really hurt the reputation of the store. It definitely is not worth the risk. Whether a painting, drawing or whatever piece of art, it should always be the original.

Instead of having all manner of artworks in a store, it is better to choose a particular category or a particular form of art and specialize in it. This can help to build a name for the store in relation to the particular artworks. The store can easily become a household name such that whenever a potential client is thinking of buying such an artwork, it is the first store that will come to his or her mind.

The importance of the internet to an upcoming entrepreneur in this field cannot go unmentioned. It is common practice in this business to put up artworks for sale on the internet. The artworks are usually sold to the highest bidder. An entrepreneur can make a lot of money via online sales. It is definitely an idea worth giving attention.

In conclusion, an entrepreneur should never forget to feature local artists in his or her art gallery West Chester PA. In as much as the local artists may not be so famous, there are those locals who enjoy home-made artworks. The local artists should never be ignored.

By Jennie Sandoval

A conceptual sculpture artist is often expected to bring out the idea in mind and make the idea superior compared to the conventional values often desired by other artists. It must be noted that perception is majorly subjective and not objective or impartial.

The concepts of concern to sculptors may sometimes be based on the material used in making the works. A sub-class of conceptual works is one based on material used. On other occasions it may be the process that is undertaken to produce the form itself. Wood, soapstone and other hybrid materials can greatly be employed in coming up with the final product.

Experts always desire to rip through the subconscious of the viewer. Like Mike Parr, Judy Pfaff also uses installations as her medium, working in organic sprawling.

The works of art created by a conceptual sculpture artist are unique, as they convey the thoughts and feelings of the artiste, in relation to a particular crisis. Something that is useful is art therapy which delves into the subconscious mind through art. It is quite powerful and deep. It can mean a lot to work on issues in your life through art.

See if you can speak to the person in charge of the gallery. You could ask them questions such as an artist's name and contact information of any particular paintings or drawings that you would like to buy. Some people commission artists to do a certain piece of work for them. They pay the artist to draw or paint a particular image or concept they have in mind.

Buying and selling art is quite an involved business. There needs to be a manager in charge who takes inventory of each piece and keeps track of all sales. Visiting A Local Art Gallery West Chester PA

By Cherry Mercer

Art comes in many different forms. When people hear the word the first thought is probably of landscapes or portraits. Inevitably this gives an idea of stuffiness or elitism. But visiting a local art gallery West Chester PA does not necessarily have to be an experience where you are on your best behavior and you have to wear a tuxedo!

When looking for one in your local area consider the kind of works that you like. Some people like to look at landscape pictures that depict relaxing coastlines or rugged countryside. For these people art is often the effort someone has gone to in order to create a beautiful picture, especially if it is of a local area of outstanding natural beauty.

The medium of the work does not necessarily have to be restricted to brushstrokes. Some artists create sculptures using metal or wood. The pieces may be dotted around outside the gallery as well as inside, enticing you in to see what else they have to offer. Other people may use videos or different types of physical textures to add additional dimensions to a piece.

The best way to check this is to look at their website. This will specify what type of gift shop they have, what items are for sale and so forth. It also helps you to see what type of pieces they have and whether they will personally appeal to you or not. For example if you are not a fan of portraits then it is worth avoiding an area of a gallery that is dedicated to portraits.

In order to see if a gallery has the kind of work you like the easiest thing to do is look on their website. This will then show you what they specialize in and whether it appeals to what you like. There is no right or wrong answer and it is about looking for something that you want to see, not just going out of a cultural obligation.

Sometimes during these exhibitions you will be able to discuss work with the artists themselves. It is often a good way to learn more about how they see their work but equally you can share your opinion with them as well. This often makes an event enjoyable, especially if a piece is designed to provoke debate!

Even if you cannot purchase the artwork itself there are a number of ways you can support a gallery and keep it going. Prints are often cheaper but still look good on the wall, while a greeting card with distinct artwork on it is often something people appreciate. Some galleries also offer services such as lifecasting, where you can have your hands, feet or other body parts cast in metals such as bronze. It is popular with families, new couples and pregnant women who want to celebrate an upcoming birth.

Another good thing about visiting an art gallery West Chester PA is that they are changing all the time. If you look at their website you can often find new artists coming in and special exhibitions, often with specific themes. Look online to find galleries in your local area so you can find the art you want to see and to keep updated about upcoming exhibitions.

Zadie Smith's famous novel White Teeth

By Jane Mansfield

When Zadie Smith published her very first novel, The Washington Post hailed her as "a postmodern Charles Dickens" What an enormous pair of shoes Smith had to fill!

Now the name Charles Dickens, much like the maligned Shakespeare, may fill you with horror and dread (depending on your English teacher, I presume!) but, whatever your reaction, it is a fact, cast in concrete, that both of these men were damn fine story tellers. Their characters are rich, complex and totally fascinating; their plots carrying you along in a whirlwind of see-saw emotions, more often than not, sprinkled with a liberal dash of heartening comedy. In addition, both Dickens and Shakespeare have left behind tales tightly entangled in our history, culture and heritage dynamic glances into a world that is simultaneously foreign and yet all too familiar. Two great writers to cherish and reverenow, let me add a third!

Zadie Smith, like Dickens, invites us to share the uniquely diverse lives of Londoners in both her first novels, published when she was only 24. In "White Teeth", set in North London, she expertly inter-weaves three families as diverse as the city itself.

The protagonist, Archie Jones, has given up on his tiresome, plodding, failure of a life. But even his attempt at suicide is a failure. Happily for the reader, Archie is afforded another go at life. And it is this 'second chance' that we are invited to share. A beautiful Jamaican wife (Smith is herself is half Jamaican) is introduced as is a daughter, Irie. And so we have the melting of cultures and the resultant concoction brings with it a fascinating read, much laughter and a deep sense of sorrow once the novel is finished.

Amad Iqbal, Archie's best friend, is a Muslim who must marry the spirited Alsana in an arranged marriage. Twin boys are born: Magid and Millat who, ironically, are as dissimilar as summer and winter. The addition of the middle class Chalfens family completes the cast: a cast which raises a plethora of themes including heritage, class, culture and gender. The novel is a genuine success with its accurate account of our modern potpourri society. It is quite clear that Smith sees her characters as old friends and she invites you, unhesitatingly, to share their lives complete with all of their suffering and their laughter.

Considering Zadie Smith wrote this novel while studying for her examinations at Cambridge University; considering the fact that she has won a list of literary awards as long as my arm; considering her remarkable testimony to the richness of London I have the audacity to agree with The Washington Post: like Dickens, she is one of the most foremost writers of all time!

A great way to keep on top of what is popular in the novel stakes is to join a book-club near you. I regularly attend Home House's monthly book-club, which is where I got the inspiration to write about White Teeth. I'm already looking forward to May's book, which will be Oscar & Lucinda by Peter Carey.
