Meisner Acting - Pretending Instead of Being

By Maggie Flanigan

Built on the foundation of the work of Sanford Meisner, the master acting coach, Meisner acting classes are designed as a progression of exercises that build more complex acting skills as you move forward. Meisner acting classes help students develop a life-long love of learning about the art of acting. Phrases such as improvisation, personal response, emotional memory, emotional preparation will take on new meaning for the student as they work through these exercises from simple repetitive phrase exercises to scene studies with complex texts.

In the beginning, Meisner acting classes may seem too simplistic, lacking real dialogue or "story" to work with. The goal of this work is to help the acting student not rely on the words of a script to communicate, but on other actors in the exercise, their own spontaneous emotional reactions to the exercise and responding behavior. Fine tuning this reliance on emotional reaction, on committing in the moment, to the action that is happening, and to creating a new reality in the moment is what professional Meisner acting classes are about.

Fond of asking pointed questions of students to help them recognize what how they might be falling short, Meisner continually challenged students to commit and have a purpose for to every action and emotional response. Even listening or sleeping is thought of as an "action" and has a purpose when using the Meisner technique. Meisner was considered by many to be a tough, yet brilliant coach, who was known for coining the phrase "acting is doing." Another one of his famous sayings "an ounce of behavior is worth a pound of words" is telling. Dialogue is all important as it tells the story and shows the characters, but unless spoken by an actor working truthfully and authentically, the words won't matter.

It is about creating a new reality, every moment, even if the actor is simply working on a simple exercise. Acting classes nyc can teach you to take the sounds, feelings, emotions, the physical space, the emotions of others and incorporate it into a moment by moment performance, even if you are just participating in an exercise. No matter how good a student is at it, "pretending" rather than "being" is a bad acting habit that needs to be broken. Getting out of your own way is the number one goal of Meisner acting classes. One aims to achieve complete self-forgetfulness, while at the same time developing complete "mindfulness" of the character and the new reality he or she is a part of creating. If this sounds difficult, then this training might be for you. Too many up and coming acting students believe acting is simply a matter of "becoming someone else" and reciting the lines as given, and doing it well. The Meisner acting technique will force you to work far more deeply than that. First, you become a different person, aware of your habits and pre-programmed emotional responses, and then you learn to do it all over again as a character. Instead you become someone new, someone real, that changes as the work progresses in unrehearsed ways.

Meisner classes are designed to help students learn about emotional truth, what it is, how to create it and how to live it out in a performance. There are some elements of behavioral science including in the discipline which were also part of what's known as "method acting" a precursor to Meisner. However, Meisner put his unique stamp on this discipline and ended up training some of the most legendary actors in theatre and in film.

Committing to emotional responses and physical actions and focusing only on what the other actors are doing is the way to propel a story forward with energy and excitement is the foundation of Meisner acting. This will move the story forward, every moment and every actor will live truthfully and achieve complete self forgetfulness, which is the key to great acting. A performance based on these principles with have a spontaneity and an authenticity that is guaranteed to be mesmerizing. This, in fact, mimics life. Not knowing what will happen at any moment, we take in what another person says, we react, we respond, we move toward the next thing. Creating that onstage successfully is one of the more exhilarating experiences you can have as an actor and Meisner acting is the best way to achieve that.

Meisner Acting - Truthful Behavior in a New Imagined Reality

By Maggie Flanigan

The work of master acting coach Sanford Meisner is what's used in Meisner acting classes, and are comprised of a series of exercises, designed to build increasingly sophisticated acting tools as you progress. A student that experiences Meisner acting classes will soon discover that they will never be done learning the craft of acting. Phrases such as improvisation, personal response, emotional memory, emotional preparation will take on new meaning for the student as they work through these exercises from simple repetitive phrase exercises to scene studies with complex texts.

At first, a student of Meisner acting classes often thinks that the exercises are simplistic and perhaps a little silly, since the initial exercises use no text, there are no lines, no story. This is so the student will tune into the subtle changes in the meaning of simple repetitive phrases as they are said back and forth between them and an acting partner, which changes the meaning of the phrase and helps them recognize the emotional shifts.

Known to be a brilliant, yet tough task master, Meisner believed that "acting is doing," even if the moment in a piece calls for silence. If one had to sum up his theory about acting, it would be his other well known quote "an ounce of behavior is worth a pound of words." Dialogue is all important as it tells the story and shows the characters, but unless spoken by an actor working truthfully and authentically, the words won't matter.

The more immersed an actor can be the new reality that is being created, even if during a simple exercise, the more likely it is that they will be able to act in the moment. Acting classes nyc can teach you to take the sounds, feelings, emotions, the physical space, the emotions of others and incorporate it into a moment by moment performance, even if you are just participating in an exercise. This can eliminate bad acting habits, such as "pretending" rather than "being." Once bad habits are broken in Meisner acting classes an actor becomes completely self forgetful, able to "be" someone else, rather than merely pretending. Being mindful, with zero self awareness, of the new reality being created in a piece and being present in it fully as a character, is the greatest experience an actor can have. If this sounds difficult, then this training might be for you. Any actor that believes that delivering dialogue and reading lines as a character, full of the appropriate emotions and personalty, is in for some serious work. The Meisner acting technique will force you to work far more deeply than that. First, you become a different person, aware of your habits and pre-programmed emotional responses, and then you learn to do it all over again as a character. The work challenges you to become someone new, someone that constantly evolves, as the work moves forward.

Students learn to recognize the emotional truth in acting, the goal Meisner classes. This involves behavioral theories, including the elements of adaptation and communication which were aspects of the discipline known as Method acting. Sanford Meisner felt that American acting was different and put his own unique stamp on the training, while at the same time developing a whole new system, which has produced some of the greatest actors of all time.

In order to generate truthful behavior in a new imagined reality, which is what theatre and film are about, an actor must focus on two things: the other actors they are playing with and moving forward in a committed way to the next moment in the scene. If they are open, and have achieved self forgetfulness, the impulses generated by fellow actors will feed this forward, moment-by-moment movement. A performance based on these principles with have a spontaneity and an authenticity that is guaranteed to be mesmerizing. This, in fact, mimics life. This is, in fact, how we live; having no idea what may happen at any moment, how others might react, what they will say, what we will say in return. Gaining the ability to create this kind of spontaneity onstage with other actors, the lines and story emerging brand new every second, is the most rewarding things you will learn in Meisner acting.

It's Time To Get Serious About Your Acting Career - Meisner Acting

Over time, if they remain open to the process, students in Meisner acting classes learn to rely on the emotional cues they get from other players in a scene or exercise and use them to create and live in a new reality they are creating in the moment.

Known for asking the same pointed questions again and again as students worked, Meisner's goal was to make the student aware that they needed to be fully committed to their emotional responses and have a purpose for actions that would propel the story forward. Even activities with no movement, such as resting, sleeping, or sitting still are still considered "actions" and according to the Meisner technique must have a purpose and must propel the story forward. Meisner was considered by many to be a tough, yet brilliant coach, who was known for coining the phrase "acting is doing." His other well known saying "an ounce of behavior is worth a pound of words," is a good way to sum up his theory about acting. The only way dialogue will work is if it is spoken by an actor who is living truthfully in the moment, with authentic emotions and behaviors.

It is about creating a new reality, every moment, even if the actor is simply working on a simple exercise. Many acting classes nyc will train the actor to use sound, feeling, emotion, physical space, and the sounds, emotions and physical expression of the other players to create an edgy exciting performance full of spontaneity. Learning this skill is the best way to change bad acting habits, especially the all pervasive myth that acting is "pretending." Getting out of your own way is the number one goal of Meisner acting classes. The aim is to eliminate self awareness while acting, and always be present in the moment, as the character, and use that energy to create the new reality of the story. If this sounds difficult, then this training might be for you. If you are still convinced that acting is merely delivering lines as given, pretending to be a character than perhaps this kind of training is for you. The Meisner acting technique will force you to work far more deeply than that. First, you become a different person, aware of your habits and pre-programmed emotional responses, and then you learn to do it all over again as a character. Instead you become someone new, someone real, that changes as the work progresses in unrehearsed ways.

Using an entire set of imagined circumstances of a character's memories, needs, obsessions, mistakes, etc. the character can just emerge and change as the story progresses, which is how Meisner works. This involves behavioral theories, including the elements of adaptation and communication which were aspects of the discipline known as Method acting. Putting his own stamp on method acting principles, Sanford Meisner developed a whole new training technique which has produced some of the most legendary actors of all time.

This system was built upon two all importune principles, that an actor must "live truthfully" while acting and to accomplish this they must focus on the other actors, not themselves. This will move the story forward, every moment and every actor will live truthfully and achieve complete self forgetfulness, which is the key to great acting. The performance will have an edge, a sense of reality that is hard to create unless spontaneity is constantly at work. After all, that's the way it is in life.

The actors instrument is something actors may have heard before, especially if they study the Meisner acting technique. While directors and actors are sometimes at odds due to creative differences, the truth is actors are the instruments, the components, that make up a successful production with a director as a conductor. Actors are the most important element of the overall "symphony" known as The Story, the instruments directors use to effectively tell that story. The job actors have is that of vision casting, taking the ideas and vision of the writer and director and making it into something believable and real using their actors instrument. The actors instrument is the most valuable element in any project, for without complex, fascinating characters there really is no story.

Making beautiful sounds is the instrument's created purpose, while actors use not only sound but physical characteristics and other very subtle forms of expression that are uniquely human. Internal and external expressions are necessary, and actors that study the Meisner technique know how to integrate them all in a fascinating way to create their "instrument." There are six parts that comprise the actors instrument, generally, and they can be listed as Intelligence, Emotion, Sensory expression, Imagination, Empathy and Physical expression. By mastering as many of these aspects as possible, and working hard at developing all of them, an actor has the ability to take on any role. Most successful actors working today have done an outstanding job of mastering many, if not all of these skills.

Every actor has their own unique physical way of expressing themselves and an awareness of the physical space around them. Meisner acting in nyc helps actors to fully explore their habits of physical expression and movement, and how that differs from that of a character and how that can be used to improve your versatility in any performance setting. Acting onstage requires a different movement technique and physical expressions than when you act for film. Actors who stand out are those who can call up various forms of physical expression and alter them to create a character.

Of course, personality actors can become top actors who are hired again and again, even though they express themselves physically in similar ways for every role. There are easily ten or fifteen actors who fall into this category that you can list without thinking too hard. Certainly, a charismatic personality is an extremely important aspect of the actors instrument, whether it is external, internal or both. Great actors have the ability to use physical expression to completely alter their appearance by using facial, and body movement. The list of actors that have mastered this would include Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Daniel Day Lewis, just to name a few.

There are actors who use their physicality to great effect, from Stallone and Schwarzenegger to Jim Carrey. Actors that have an ability to develop and project strong physical characteristics to express character can handle any role. Actors who know how to move and express themselves physically in many different ways to create different characters has gone even deeper into their craft.

Expressing emotions physically is a complex thing and goes far beyond facial expression or developing a way of walking, for example. The art of becoming a character in a physical way is an incredible challenge, but it also means existing in a physical way in a newly created physical space. A great actor is one who has not only mastered the art of physical space and expression but can use it to reflect all other aspects of the instrument. Actors who can develop strong physical abilities are also more versatile. Charisma, and a strong presence onstage or on camera is important but, it may not be enough to get you the most challenging parts. Learning to create the physical aspects of a character, and using it to enrich the other elements of the actors instrument, will get you the work you desire.

What Dystopian Novels Mean To Literature

By Penelope Walker

A dystopia is an imaginary place/state of a terrible condition of life, through factors such as oppression and deprivation. Accordingly, a dystopian novel takes place in such a state, usually within a single society. Here are some of the most popular dystopian novels of English literature.

"1984", a novel by George Orwell, is perhaps the most well-known book of the genre. It centers on Oceania, a society controlled by a select group of people. Mind control, government surveillance, and suppression of individuality are deployed by the government to maintain control. The novel also explores themes such as futurology and sexual repression.

Another important work of the genre "Fahrenheit 451", was written by Ray Bradbury. It explores the detrimental effects of outlawing reading, and the effects of mass media on literature. The government in this novel is controlling and oppressive, much like the government in "1984".

In most novels of this genre, the government maintains stability; some, however, can be post-apocalyptic. "The Stand" falls into this category, written by Stephen King. It centers on a super-virus that is released from an army base and kills ninety-nine percent of living humans. It's quite long at over eight hundred pages, but is nevertheless critically-praised.

Through the 21st century, this genre has changed significantly. The Hunger Games trilogy is currently achieving fame for its portrayal of a violent futuristic society. In the future, North America is a twelve-district nation called "Panem", a fight to the death is held each year between twenty-four representatives, one boy and girl from each district.

Dystopian novels may never lose their popularity; after all, we all think about the future from time to time. Most books in this genre speculate on how certain aspects of our cultures can lead us down dangerous paths; not all of them attempt to predict the future. In this sense, this genre can educate readers about consequences of actions we are currently taking.

How Art Renovation Is Undertaken

By Aaron Thomas

Artwork recovery is difficult work. Whilst cleaning of the piece of art is usually necessary for the purposes of preservation treatment, it's commonly carried out for other reasons and different decisions may be equally legitimate as far as the way the painting is recovered providing it can be executed safely.

Of course, the final results may possibly appear completely different. Like a well-known art work repair expert once proclaimed: "each and every cleaning is an action of crucial interpretation". Nevertheless, most often it's possible and desirable to undergo all of the phases of cleaning and uncover unobscured authentic paint. The actual cleaned artwork can be in practically top condition, or it can look distinctively disconcerting having its previous damages still showing. Paint may also be authentic but no longer look original. Colors might have changed colour or even washed out or even the transparency of the paint may possibly expose under layers not at first discernible to the eye.

The painting restoration professional then has another decision that he needs to make. Just how much restoration ought to be done? That is, how much of the old damage which needs to be obscured by new paint repair and retouching? Cleaning decisions undoubtedly determine just how a painting might appear, but so too does the approach to repair.

Repair must balance two disagreeing needs, those of legibility and authenticity. On the one hand, the observer would like to see a composition uninterrupted by deterioration and decline. However on the other hand, it's important to understand which aspects of the original is actually painted and which aren't. These needs are often satisfied by the restoration expert insisting on a comprehensive photographic document of the actual work to be cleaned, together with full artwork restoration.

If a total photographic impression of the original is not found or even can't be acquired, then it's up to the specific art work restoration specialist to take some artistic liberties using the encircling areas of the piece of art as a guide. This is actually the inventive part of artwork restoration and one that cannot be calculated with quantitative analysis. A qualified specialist could be the difference between the painting resembling the original and it resembling a painting that's clearly been retouched and restored.

It normally takes numerous years of practice and continuous refining of techniques to generate a painting which looks like the original. If a piece of art is several hundred years old, this is even more of a problem because the artwork recovery professional has to create their very own paint to help make it similar to the texture and color of the original. This is when the inventive part of the equation is needed. Like I said previously, a lot of artwork repair is far more art than science.

Artwork recovery specialists use these meticulous techniques to clean and recover invaluable art pieces along with humdrum paintings which can be viewed at the local library. The caliber of their artistry can almost certainly be assessed by the trained eye, in many cases it's the novice that may recognize the results of restoration which might be much more apparent. Nevertheless, art work refurbishment is a vital and essential task done by educated professionals to make longstanding works of art saved for future generations to relish and admire for a long time to come.

20 soon & Sterilized

By Laura Carroll

Many women who know without question they do not ever wish to have kids seek out a tubal ligation. When the ladies are young, many doctors feel the need to ask numerous questions as an effort to talk them out of sterilization. Other doctors will not do the procedure in any way.

Some childfree girls , however , some get lucky and find a ready doctor to perform the procedure. Even allowing for this many girls then have to clarify and explain why they do this before, during and after. How would mothers feel if countless questions came at them before they had youngsters, like, So why is it you would like children? Are you sure? How can you be sure you will not regret it? Or questions while she is attempting to get pregnant: Are you sure you're definite? Or after: So why is it you wanted kids? How does one feel now that you are a mother? Do you regret it? These kind of questions seem silly, but it gives you a flavor for how it feels when it's about not having kids. These ladies are adults and should not have to explain or excuse what they feel is the best for them.

The explaining and justifying isn't just for ladies. 20 something guys who are sure of the same get the 3rd degree also. For 28 year old Toby who had a vasectomy, he probably did it on nationwide television. The Today Show did a piece on him and his choice to end his reproductive life. He had to offer solutions to all categories of questions like how it will affect finding an other half, how will he feel about ending his folks line, what about leaving a legacy, and the like.

The segment even has a sex consultant advising what guys like Toby should do as they consider the choice not to have youngsters, they have to glance at the possibility that their absence of parental desire has to do with wounds from history, or bag they may still be carrying. Fair enough.

But should it not work the other far too for those who think that they need children? Like asking oneselfâ€"Does my wish stem from injuries from past times? Do I want a child to help me heal those wounds from the past? Do I want to be a parent so I'm able to parent the way That I always wished to be parented?

For men and women who are positive they do not need children and who feel sterilization is the right option for them, when will we as a society be well placed to just leave it at that? When the choice not to reproduce is just as accepted as the choice to reproduce, that's when we are going to have true reproductive freedom.

The facts about DINKs, Dual Income No Kids, Couples

By Laura Carroll

When talking of talking about the childfree, the acronym "DINK" is typically some of it. DINKs are "dual income no youngsters" couples. The term first started to be used about 10 years back. There was one myth about DINKs then that still remains todayâ€"that DINKs have plenty of disposable cash.

They must, right? Sure, they don?t have to spend all the money it takes to raise kids. But simply because they don?t have youngsters does not mean they have fat accounts heaps of adult toys, and the cash for costly travel. Quite the contrary. The truth of the matter is the childfree are across the socioeconomic range.

The socioeconomic status of DINKs seems fall into an ordinary distribution?a small % are on the higher end and fit the myth of the DINK. They are in the higher socioeconomic echelons. At the other end, there's a little percentage that fall on the lower socioeconomic end. Similar to the childfree in general, many childfree on this end of the spectrum take the kid call very seriously. Those on the bottom of the socioeconomic continuum can come to the decision they're not going to have youngsters because they can't justify the price or are unhappy to do what it would most likely take to afford them, e.g, get a second job and not spend sufficient time with their youngsters as a consequence.

The majority fall somewhere on the rest of the ordinary distribution continuum?in that large category called the middle class, from upper middle to lower, and everything between. They come from all kinds of life and are in spread of professions.

But sites like thedinklife.com and nochildrenbychoice.com paint the picture of DINKs as only people who are on the higher end, people who can afford the boats and the glamorous travel. As fantastic as this might look, this just does not represent lots of those that do not have youngsters by choice. Even ?dual earnings? Is sometimes not accurate. Sometimes one partner doesn't work outside of the home, and many other times especially these days, one partner is not earning revenue right now?they are on the lookout for a job.

So when you see the term DINK, remember it's not associated with the word ?childfree. ? DINKs are one slice of the childfree population, not the entire pie!

Scott Tucker Takes on the Pavement and Shows His abilities as a driver

By Molly Black

It needs superb concentration, strength of mind, pure talent and huge time put in the practice ring for an athlete to master their sport to the point of being the top competitors worldwide. It does take double that recipe for an athlete to attain mastery of two different playing positions in that sport. So what exactly has it taken for Level 5 Motorsports owner and driver Scott Tucker to attain superb status in four sports car racing series-all at the same time? Only Scott Tucker knows that.

Not only has Tucker preserved an impossible agenda of races in the American Le Mans Series, Grand-Am series, Ferrari Challenge series and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup series, but he's in fact succeeded in most of them. Including most of his victories came on the same weekends as other wins, since Tucker was often double, triple or quadruple-scheduled.

Tucker's latest podium finish was with a brand new vehicle, last weekend at the American Le Mans Series Monterey at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. The Microsoft Office-sponsored car was the product of a partnership among Honda Performance Development and Wirth Research. The HPD ARX-01g really helped the team reach its strongest overall finish of the season, at fourth. The automobile was totally new for the team and for Tucker, but being in the same exact LMP2 group, it wasn't the severest vehicle discrepancy Tucker had ever faced.

Tucker helped drive Level 5 Motorsports to a win at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a difficult endurance race in Florida at the Sebring International Raceway. That exact weekend, he was also schedule to drive in the Porsche GT3 Cup. He drove, and he won-his 2nd win of the weekend in as many races.

These accomplishments would be to some degree less notable if the cars were anything alike. Whenever a driver competes in a race, he keeps significant g-forces, remarkably warm temperatures, hours of intense focus and effort, and constant critical thought. In endurance racing especially, to pass through these conditions and come out on top seems a superhuman feat-but to leave the podium finish and do it all another time, only to finish up on another podium-seems downright extremely hard.

"I lose five to seven pounds every race," Tucker has stated. In order to hold his overstocked race schedule, he has to keep serious willpower in his physical regimen as well as his health. To condition for less intense schedules, he has woken up at 4:30 a.m. to do one hour of cardio workouts before performing other training. His current 2011 schedule is much more demanding.

"Driving a Porsche and a prototype couldn't be anything more different," Tucker said while at Sebring. "I've done it in the past, and I've kind of gotten used to it, but it's still a pretty difficult thing to do."

The cars have to have different driving styles, Tucker proclaimed. His achievements in all 4 series has validated his overall flexibility and staying power as a driver, as well as his profound determination to win. But particularly true, it illustrates his passion for the sport. Having entered the industry as a novice in 2006 at the age of Forty four, Tucker didn't have a lot of time to waste. He has frequently entered every race he possibly can and treated each one as if it were his last chance for a championship. His success not only as a somewhat new driver but also as a multi-car driver is evidence that in sports, anything is realistic.

Commercial Acting Class - Developing Identities and Real Personalities

By Maggie Flanigan

Despite the fact that Shia LaBeouf once stated that he was a "lonely dude", it is doubtful that this feeling is shared by many other actors. He implies that being lonely is a price that an actor pays for his craft. Being "brokenhearted", he stated to The Washington Post, is an essential part of being a true actor. It is likely that there were several actors who took offense to LaBeouf's statement. Of course, there are those actors who would agree with his assertion as the concept of the "suffering artist" has become so popular.

As any good commercial acting class with teach you, a successful actor must consider human emotion and nature in any and every performance. However, an actor does not need to suffer in order to successfully perform in auditions and land meaningful roles. How can an actor embrace a role and explore a stereotype without becoming lost in the role?

When talking about character identities and stereotypes, distortion immediately comes to mind. Meisner training, along with other acting methods, consider distortion to be a necessary skill. All actors distort the truth, from those who are involved in dramatic films to those that perform on reality shows. A properly executed distortion can actually allow us to see ourselves more clearly. This is the crux of an actor's job.

The Meisner technique teaches that stereotypes are personalities that have been distorted. They are, in fact, essential to creating characters. They cannot, however, be allowed to take over the entire personality. Even a seemingly "cartoon-like" character who appears to be the definition of a stereotype must have layers of personality that add complexity. For example, a good actor will be able to create a character who has a tragic aspect but also maintains a comical exterior.

A partial use of stereotypes can help the audience to better understand your character, at least on a superficial level that can be fleshed out later on in the performance. Later on, the character must be given complexity or the audience will become disenchanted and bored. If the writer has written a particular character as a stereotype for a reason, this must be followed carefully in order to create a genuine performance.

Many actors are known for their sensitivity to the human condition. Actors are just like everyone else in that they can suffer from financial troubles, heartbreak, and other human occurrences. Suffering, however, does not need to occur for an actor to succeed in his craft. Success can only come from dedication and from continued study.

Commercial Acting Class - How Actors can Use Stereotypes Effectively

By Maggie Flanigan

Shia LaBeouf once said that, as an actor, he was a "lonely dude" but there is little evidence that many other actors share this feeling. The implication in this statement is that loneliness is a price that is paid by actors. In an interview for The Washington Post, he stated that a real actor must be, at least to a certain extent, "brokenhearted". It is likely that there were several actors who took offense to LaBeouf's statement. However, due to the popularized concept of the "suffering artist", there were probably others who took his statement to heart.

As any commercial acting workshop that provides quality commercial acting techniques will teach you, it is impossible to be a good actor and to not be in tune with the plight of the human condition. However, there is no reason for an actor to himself suffer in order to be able to succeed in an audition. Is there a way for an actor to truly embrace and succeed in a role without becoming overly invested in the emotional turmoil involved?

When discussing identity and stereotypes, the term that must be discussed is distortion. The Meisner technique, along with other schools of acting, teaches that distortion is absolutely necessary for actors. Every performance, from film to reality shows, requires that actors distort the truth. Distortion, if well executed, is actually able to reveal truths previously undiscovered by the actor about himself. This is the crux of an actor's job.

The Meisner technique teaches that stereotypes are personalities that have been distorted. They do play a large role when it comes to creating a character. It is essential, however, that stereotypes not be allowed to dominate the entire role. Even the simplest character must be more complex than a basic stereotype. The best actors will create characters that have opposing layers, such as a tragic figure with a great sense of comedic timing.

Some stereotypical aspects of a character may be helpful in a performance as it will allow your audience to quickly gain at least a partial understanding of your character. Later on, the character must be given complexity or the audience will become disenchanted and bored. If the writer has written a particular character as a stereotype for a reason, this must be followed carefully in order to create a genuine performance.

A part of the actor's gift is his sensitivity to his surroundings. Actors are not immune to suffering and can sustain illnesses and endure problems just like all the rest. Suffering, however, does not need to occur for an actor to succeed in his craft. Success comes, instead, from continued study, passion, and dedication.

Commercial Acting Class - How To Create Distorted Personalities Without Being Dominated By Stereotypes

By Maggie Flanigan

Despite the fact that Shia LaBeouf once stated that he was a "lonely dude", it is doubtful that this feeling is shared by many other actors. The implication in this statement is that loneliness is a price that is paid by actors. In an interview for The Washington Post, he stated that a real actor must be, at least to a certain extent, "brokenhearted". It is likely that there were several actors who took offense to LaBeouf's statement. There are, however, probably many individuals who took hold of his statement and adopted it as their own due to the common "suffering artist" stereotype.

As any good commercial acting class with teach you, a successful actor must consider human emotion and nature in any and every performance. However, there is no reason for an actor to himself suffer in order to be able to succeed in an audition. Therefore, how does an actor explore and develop characters withing becoming too emotionally invested?

When discussing identity and stereotypes, the term that must be discussed is distortion. Regardless of whether the actor is learning commercial acting techniques or methods for other types of acting, distortion is a necessary talent. All actors distort the truth, from those who are involved in dramatic films to those that perform on reality shows. Distortion, if well executed, is actually able to reveal truths previously undiscovered by the actor about himself. This is the crux of an actor's job.

The Meisner technique teaches that stereotypes are personalities that have been distorted. They do play a large role when it comes to creating a character. They cannot, however, be allowed to take over the entire personality. Even the simplest character must be more complex than a basic stereotype. For example, a good actor will be able to create a character who has a tragic aspect but also maintains a comical exterior.

Utilizing a character stereotype, particularly at the beginning of a performance, can allow your viewer to get a handle on the type of character that you are presenting. Later on, the character must be given complexity or the audience will become disenchanted and bored. Occasionally, the writer will use stereotypical characters as a device which means that the character must be carefully illustrated.

Many actors are particularly sensitive to their world and their fellow man. Actors are people just like everyone else and can suffer just like we can. It becomes dangerous, however, when an actor believes that suffering is essential for true success. Success comes, instead, from continued study, passion, and dedication.
