Can Your Lack of Publishing Experience Become an Advantage?

By Ralph Erickson

It is common wisdom in the writing world that an established publisher won't actually consider the writing of a new author. While there may be a grain of truth behind this myth, I have found that nearly all publishers are more open to new novelists than you may think.

There are a few significant benefits to being a new writer as well. Therefore, before you write off any potential publishers, consider the possibility that your status as a newbie might not be a bad thing after all. You are likely in a better position than you would ever guess.

After interviewing numerous publishers, I have zeroed in on reasons why being a new author might not be a disadvantage.

It's Easier to Impress - If you claim to be an experienced author, an editor is likely to expect a great deal. That means it will take serious effort to really wow them. Even a good article might not be enough to really seize their attention. However, if you readily admit that you are a fresh writer, it will take way less effort to make an impression. Presenting a high quality draft could even be enough to make an impression early on.

There Exists Space to Grow - If the editor sees that you're a fresh author, you're providing them with the opportunity to foster new talent. Many editors will jump at this opportunity. If you're new and suitable for their publication, you might groomed until you match their own style. This isn't likely to occur if the editor perceives that you are experienced. Instead of considering your work and believing that it shows potential, they'll end up presuming it's the very best that you can turn out.

The same scenario isn't going to transpire if the publisher perceives that you are experienced. Instead of taking a look at your hard work and believing that it shows potential, they'll be presuming it's the best that you can do.

Attitude Makes a Difference - Numerous seasoned authors have a bit of an attitude, a hint of mistrust, and sometimes a streak of apathy. Fresh new authors generally have nothing but positive energy along with determination. They tend to be ready to accept challenges which veteran writers would be unwilling to think about.

If you cannot enter the field with publishing experience, go in with enthusiasm. That could be the golden ticket that will launch your career as a professional author.
