Long live Saint George!

By Ricky Hislop

For someone who is British through and through, I was surprised to find out how little I really know about the Patron Saint of England, Saint George. I must admit that I've never really remembered the date, I don't know how we celebrate the occasion, and I most certainly didn't realise that a large number of other countries also worship the same Saint George: Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Portugal, Russia and Palestine, the list goes on and on.

It is said that George was born in Turkey, in the third century, to devout Christian parents. In his adult life, he became a brave Roman solider, serving under a strict, Pagan leader. Tired and continuously hurt by the Roman's torture of Christians, George stood up to his leader, an audacious act that ultimately lead to his untimely beheading. This spirited and gallant man died in youth for his beliefs.

Now I knew little of this Christian versus Pagan story. Instead, I have been more accustomed to the mystical tale of Saint George; of his supposed slaying of a mighty, mean dragon on the islands of Libya. However, looking at studies on the topic, it seems this is a more fabricated tale of his time on the Roman battlefields, with the dragon really being symbolic of the evil, Pagan leader who beheaded him.

Regardless of which story you prefer to the follow, the imagery in both remains the same. Whether you look at paintings of a Roman Christian solider or a young and gallant Knight slaying a dragon, in pretty much all of them, George is carrying a special shield, adorned with the red cross of England.

These days, St. George's Day doesn't seem as popular in the UK as it should be. As a nation, we really should celebrate our Patron Saint with as much enthusiasm as the Irish and the Welsh. After-all, for such a small country, we certainly have made our mark on the world politically, socially and artistically.

If you're looking for somewhere extra special and nostalgic to celebrate this St. George's Day, you should head on down to Home House of Portman Square in London. Celebrate England's Patron Saint with a classic selection of ingredients including smoked salmon, asparagus, rib of beef, bread and butter pudding and sherry trifle (vegetarian option available), as well delicious, crisp, fruity wine.

Flowers and Painting, How I Became a Painter

By John Philip

Other than their part in the sequence of life, I do believe flowers are here in the routine of life for three significant reasons. First, to impress the senses, second, to lift the soul, and finally, for musicians and artists to create. They are actually all these three to me, and I think I'm especially accountable for the third.

I had been the girl who sat all day inside the yard, sketching the assortment of blooms my dad had adoringly planted as well as maintained. They were there, these were gorgeous, they posed simply, I'd time then, along with the skills I appreciated utilizing. Certainly not for any some other goal than the particular fulfillment of witnessing something come to living, turn into 3dimensional on the level surface merely through touches of pressure and shadings made using a regular old pencil. I actually have been unexpectedly honing the craft I would utilize my entire life.

I drew other pursuits also, the unusual sugar can, a barn, a cedar, photos from document collections of my personal favorite artists. I had leaf through Living Abroad magazines and often uncover something draw-worthy; almost all of the time it would end up being faces from locations I had not yet been to or a fascinating animal. I did not believe I had been extremely innovative then regardless of whether I naturally noticed, or learned to notice, my time with document and pen was virtually all about tones and shades making something real. I simply was exercising; mastering skills, self-teaching. Over time I would surely feel totally free to venture into way more creative and conceptual place, even so, it had been how nicely can I draw this?

My first flowers were finely detailed pen work. I used inks after which watercolors, and eventually oils. Every medium contributed a different feeling, different subtleties and different types of characteristic. Then again, at some point on the particular canvas I strayed from details (I'd always covertly desired to however, previous behavior die quite hard, it certainly was my very own comfort zone and acquired lots of awards, so just why halt the good thing?) and allow the brush conduct more the conversing. I appreciated what it said.

That is not to imply I don't, or won't, do more detail (a single glimpse at my monster paintings and you will find that's just not been discontinued!), however i really like the progression, the modification, the flexibility that's come along at this point within the street that says, paint it however you want, Saxton. You have gotten nothing to prove anymore .

It brings me again to flowers. Those stimulating blessings of charm! They'll continually blossom on someone's canvas, somewhere, I envision, until the end of time, including several of my own.

The Colonial History Of Ghana Politics

By Ava Hudson

Ghana politics today is structured like many European nations. This includes a head of state who is referred to as the President, and a Parliament which provides a sharing of legislative powers. In the 1980s, this particular system was established in an attempt to prevent another military coup, and to keep Presidents from becoming dictators.

Prior to the colonial rule so common in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this area was said to be the heart of their Ashanti Empire. Historically, it is said that this empire had as many as half a million troops to its credit, and was a real powerhouse in pre-colonial Africa. This was a very centralized state that conducted wars of expansion.

Primarily fought to collect taxes from neighboring kingdoms and pacify territories under Ashanti rule, these wars also secured trade routes to the interior of Africa. The Ashanti empire was most certainly involved in the slave trade long before the trafficking that took place with European colonialism. They were importers of slaves, however.

The Gold Coast made this area desirable to Europe, as there was a great deal of gold mined from there. Portuguese slave traders were the first Europeans to settle the area, and they established several forts during the thirteenth century. Along with the Portuguese, the Dutch Trading Company also maintained a presence for nearly a century.

With the rise of the industrial age, slave trading slowly became illegal starting in 1806, and finally ending in 1860. At this point, Europeans sought to acquire lands in Africa in order to extract raw materials. In a series of wars against the Ashanti, Europeans were able to acquire many towns along the Gold Coast.

There were as many as four wars between the Ashanti Empire and the British Empire, although many Africans living in British occupied towns supported the Europeans. An agreement in 1875 put an end to a lot of the conflict. It required them to acquiesce the southern coastal towns to Britain, and keep the trade road to Kumasi open.

With the twentieth century, there was less conflict with Europe. New food crops were brought into the area, and coffee became the largest cash crop for the Ghanians. With the end of the second world war, people in this part of Africa were wealthy, well educated, and ready to take over the rule of their own lands.

The later half of the twentieth century saw a rise of centralized totalitarian governments. In 1960 it became a republic, and Nkrumah won the election. He then declared himself president for life, and thus began a period of political and economic turmoil for the people of this region.

The Busia administration was able to overtake Nkrumah, but they did not prove to be any better. Harsh austerity measures were imposed against the people, including those who ran their military. Many foreign businesses and people were evicted from the country. Fed up with the austerity of Ghana politics, a military coup took over the country and maintained power until 1980.
